Works Volume 1, is the fifth studio album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released as a double album in March 1977 on Atlantic Records. Following their successful 1974 world tour, the group took a break from recording and touring. They relocated to Montreux, Switzerland and Paris, France to record a new album. Each member was allocated one side of a record to write and arrange their own tracks which were performed by the group

Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) were an English progressive rock supergroup formed in London in 1970. The band consisted of keyboardist Keith Emerson; singer, bassist, guitarist and producer Greg Lake; and drummer and percussionist Carl Palmer.

First of all, what needs to be said before anything else is that Works Volume 1 is NOT for those who enjoy Emerson, Lake & Palmer's early 70's stuff. This entire album is dominated with London Symphony Orchestra arrangements which paints a completely different picture of the band. It's drastically different from their 1970-74 classic period. With that said, while most of this stuff didn't make an impression on me the first few listens, a good portion of this stuff might eventually grow on you if you're willing to work with it. I can't help but compare Works.

Works, Volume 1. Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Works, Volume 1 Tracklist. Piano Concerto No. 1 Lyrics. 4. Hallowed Be Thy Name Lyrics. 5. Nobody Loves You Like I Do Lyrics. 6. Closer to Believing Lyrics. Similar to Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma, Works, Volume 1, features solo tracks from each of the three band members, with Emerson on side 1, Lake on the second side, and Palmer on the third. The fourth and final side included songs worked on by the group together, as with their preceding work. Works, Volume 1 Q&A.

Therefore, Works, Volume 1 is only partially an Emerson, Lake and Palmer album in the truest sense. Such an approach in recording was a double edged sword for the band – their very different skills and styles made for an interesting and diverse album, but it also laid them open to accusations of pretentious self indulgence. They also probably lost something recording so much as individuals rather than as a band. The first two movements are in a largely gentle, pastoral style, but it seems that during the recording process Keith’s house burnt down, which he later revealed influenced the final section to be far more aggressive and dramatic.
