La mer, trois esquisses symphoniques pour orchestre (French for The sea, three symphonic sketches for orchestra), or simply La mer (. The Sea), L. 109, is an orchestral composition by the French composer Claude Debussy. Composed between 1903 and 1905, the piece was premiered in Paris in October 1905. It was initially not well received; even some who had been strong supporters of Debussy's work were unenthusiastic.

The day of its premiere, La Mer perplexed its audience. According to François Lesure, "no work by Debussy suffered as greatly as La Mer because of the chasm between its original ideas and its cold reception by audiences for years. With its rhythmic and tempo changes, its "sudden dynamic explosions", the work is novel and innovative in its ideas.

Debussy - La Mer. Claude Debussy's rich and evocative depiction of the underwater realm remains an impressionistic milestone, a classic of its type. But what makes La Mer so good? Ever-resistant to the confines of normal practice, impressionist composer Claude Debussy insisted that his La Mer was not a symphony. No, even though it contains three symphonic movements that could quite happily be classified as a symphony. La Mer (literally 'The Sea') was a confusing prospect to audiences of 1905, as it was neither a normal symphony nor a complete departure. Parisian audiences initially didn't really warm to it either, perhaps partly because of the scandal of Debussy having left his wife for the singer Emma Barduc. Debussy took inspiration not from the rolling waves of the Pacific or the Atlantic, but from the rather more unlikely locale of Eastbourne on the south coast of England.

Sample Heras-Casado's masterly way with the opening of La Mer: he gives himself room to develop the movement and to reveal small details while remaining true to the majesty of the subject. This album makes a fine place for the general listener to start with Debussy, containing his two most famous orchestral works plus a hint of what else is out there.
