Workingman's Dead is the fourth Grateful Dead studio album. It was recorded in February 1970 and originally released on June 14, 1970. The album and its studio follow-up, American Beauty, were recorded back-to-back using a similar style, eschewing the psychedelic experimentation of previous albums in favor of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's Americana-styled songcraft. In 2003, the album was ranked number 262 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Grateful Dead’s fourth studio album, Workingman’s Dead, was released in the summer of 1970 and has a country and folk rock Americana sound courtesy of the production from the group and songwriting of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. The style was influenced in part by the sounds of Crosby, Stills & Nash, as well as the Bakersfield sound. The album was reissued with live versions of five album cuts, along with an alternate mix of New Speedway.

Fourth studio album Workingman's Dead reflects both the looming darkness of its time, and the endless hope and openness to possibility that would become emblematic of the Dead as their legacy grew. For a group already established as exploratory free-form rockers of the highest acclaim, Workingman’s Dead's eight tunes threw off almost all improvisatory tendencies in favor of spare, thoughtful looks at folk, country, and American roots music with more subdued sounds than the band had managed up until then. The abrupt shift toward sublime acoustic sounds on Workingman's Dead completely changed what the Grateful Dead meant to their listeners at large. The enormous risk they took in changing their sound entirely resulted in a heartbreakingly beautiful, unquestionably pure statement and one of the more important documents of its time.

Some boundaries Workingman's Dead brok for them, was having an album based upon their musical upbringing. Which was Blues, Folk, Rock n Roll, and Bluegrass. And that is so easily seen. And they learned how to stack their vocals from their good friends Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Since they taught The Grateful Dead how to stack vocals, Jerry decided to lend his pedal steel guitar talent to their song "Teach your Children". Uncle John's Band: A Grateful Dead classic. Combining folk, dual acoustic guitars, and some fabulous emotional lead guitar from Jerry
