Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" is a blues standard written by Jimmy Cox in 1923. Its lyric, told from the point of view of a one-time millionaire during the Prohibition era, reflects on the fleeting nature of material wealth and the friendships that come and go with it. As a vaudeville-style blues, it was popularized by Bessie Smith, the preeminent female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s. Since her 1929 recording, it has been interpreted by numerous musicians in a variety of styles.

When you're staring at a demigod. What can I say except you're welcome For the tides, the sun, the sky Hey, it's okay, it's okay You're welcome I'm just an ordinary demiguy. Hey! What has two thumbs and pulled up the sky When you were waddling yay high This guy! When the nights got cold Who stole you fire from down below You're lookin' at him, yo. Oh, also I lassoed the sun You're welcome! To stretch the days and bring you fun. Also I harnessed the breeze You're welcome! To fill your sails and shake your trees. I killed an eel I buried its guts Sprouted a tree, now you got coconuts What's the lesson What is the take-away Don't mess with Maui when he's on a breakaway. And the tapestry here on my skin Is a map of the victories I win Look where I've been I make everything happen Look at that mean mini-Maui just tickety-tappin' Ha! Ha! Ha!

Come all you young sailor men, listen to me I'll sing you a song of the fish in the sea: And it's windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys When the wind blows, we're all together, boys; Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes. Up jumps the eel with his slippery tail Climbs up aloft and reefs the topsail

When they had quietened down, Māui took the sacred jawbone of his ancestor from his belt and waved it in the air. "I have achieved many things that were thought impossible – gaining fire from Mahuika, catching the greatest fish in the world, descending to the underworld, and many more. With this magic jawbone, gifted by Murirangawhenua, and with your help, I will succeed in conquering the sun!" The majority of the people agreed that Māui had achieved many great feats, they decided to help Māui in his quest  . If you run now the sun will see you when he rises from his pit. You will be the first ones to die. There is no turning back!"

Who stole you fire from down below? You’re looking at him, yo. Oh, also I lassoed the sun – you’re welcome. To stretch your days and bring you fun. Also I harnessed the breeze, You’re welcome!, To fill your sails and shake your trees. Don’t mess with Maui when he’s on a breakaway. And the tapestry here in my skin!
