Savages' full-length debut may just be a group of tracks, but they're an incredibly performed, produced, and written group of tracks that bring the energy of old school post-punk and gothic rock alive again. What did you think of this album? Love it?
Album · 2013 · 11 Songs. Silence Yourself Savages.
Silence Yourself is the debut studio album by the English post-punk band Savages, released on 6 May 2013 on Matador Records and Pop Noire, a label owned by vocalist Jehnny Beth. It was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize. Critics made a parallel with British post-punk of the late 1970s, Magazine and Gang of Four. NME wrote that 'French frontwoman Jehnny Beth has moulded herself into the demonic, possessed spawn of Ian Curtis and Siouxsie Sioux"
Silence Yourself Album Artwork Lyrics
Silence Yourself proves that Savages are more than just talk. Savages' music feels out of step with current trends- which I'm sure they'd take as a compliment. Savages might make political pronouncements in interviews and on album covers, but their songs come from a lived-in perspective as Beth inhabits her different characters’ states of mind- and forces the listener to do the same. How old are you, really?" a voice asks in the opening seconds of the album; it hovers in the air without an answer. It might be a knowing sneer at critics who think Savages are just recycling post-punk’s signature sound, but ostensibly it’s also a salute to an artistic kindred spirit.
There are several important things you must do before listening to Silence Yourself, the debut album from London four-piece Savages. Lie flat on your back, turn out every light in the room then disconnect yourself from the Internet, from your phone, from any form of social interaction. Do all these things and the subsequent blistering 38 minutes will be amongst the most claustrophobically rewarding of your aural year. Savages want you, me, all of us to just shut up. During live performances they have repeatedly bemoaned the unfortunate modern ubiquity of handheld photographic devices
Plenty of bands have resuscitated post-punk throughout the 2000s and 2010s, but few have done so with the passion that reverberates through Savages' debut album, Silence Yourself. The band's early singles drew favorable comparisons to Patti Smith, Siouxsie Sioux, and a host of other strong female acts with post-punk roots, and the entire album burns with the same kind of confrontational fire those older artists had - which, somewhat paradoxically, makes Savages sound particularly refreshing compared to many of their more blasé contemporaries.
Silence Yourself is a good album, and you should listen to it if you like Joy Division or Siouxsie and the Banshees. The album can be compelling at times, but others it just falls flat. Yes, it is perfectably listenable but it lacks a certain excitement throughout the album which other albums this year have. Silence Yourself is a loud, angry, restless album that does keep itself horrendously short of more subtle, relieving sound, but it is on theSilence Yourself is a loud, angry, restless album that does keep itself horrendously short of more subtle, relieving sound, but it is on the other hand an immensely enjoyable album when you're in the right mood for it.
