Rocket from the Crypt is an American rock band from San Diego, California, originally active from 1989 to 2005, then active during 2011 and again from 2013 to the present. The band gained critical praise and the attention of major record labels after the release of their 1992 album Circa: Now!, leading to a recording contract with Interscope Records.

Pledging to never play a venue with a stage, singer/guitarist John Reis formed San Diego's Rocket from the Crypt in the summer of 1990 after becoming disillusioned with the hardcore punk band he was in called Pitchfork. Joining with then-current Rocketeers bassist Petey X and guitarist ., in addition to departed drummer Sean and backing vocalist Elaina, Reis and company released Paint as a Fragrance in 1991.

The added tracks ("Trouble" and "Masculine Intuition") comprised the "Rocket from the Crypt Plays the Music Machine" 5-inch (yes, five) Sympathy From the Record Industry release, and are not as interesting. I think they are covers of older songs that you'll probably listen to once. But the main course of this meal is the first six tracks, which any self-respecting RFTC fans should devour immediately.

Superchunk's Jon Wurster actually plays the skins on most of the tracks, as Rubalcaba (redubbed in Rocket-style Ruby Mars) only officially joined towards the end of recording, but either way the band sounds fully up to necessary events. Straight American Slave" says that much at the start - it's Rocket as all have come to know and love them, garage/punk/R&B grooves tightly wound as hell, horns ripping joyfully through the mix, call and response choruses, and Reis as always the at-once slick and raging frontman.
