Chihei Hatakeyama is a musician and an organizer who was born in 1978, and lives in the outskirts of Tokyo. He has performed for years under his given name and also as one half of the electroacoustic duo Opitope, along with Tomoyoshi Date. Hatakeyama got involved in playing music through strumming a guitar in a few rock-oriented bands in his teenage years. Too Much Sadness ‎(CD, Album).

Chihei Hatakeyama is fascinated by physical illusion. Last November he released ‘Too Much Sadness’, a record expressing the overwhelming emotions wrought by the 2011 Fukushima earthquake; the music, made by playing a crackling old record from Hatakeyama’s collection and sampling it, was transformed by dust - it occurred to me that the sound of dust might actually be the sonic form of time. The record was a friendly storm: thanks to that dust, a constant torrent of noise and crackle droned over the music Hatakeyama had curated.

About Chihei Hatakeyama. Chihei Hatakeyama is a Tokyo-based ambient musician and mastering engineer who creates chiming, shimmering soundscapes with acoustic instruments (including guitar, vibraphone, and piano) and laptop processing. His works often evoke scenes from nature, and appropriately include an abundant amount of field recordings and other organic sounds. Since the release of his well-received debut album, Minima Moralia (Kranky), in 2006, he has been remarkably prolific as both a solo artist and collaborator, and his work has always maintained a consistently high quality. Hatakeyama originally began making music as part of various hardcore and metal bands, and his interests gradually drifted toward experimental rock and classical music. He formed a duo called Opitope in 2002 with Tomoyoshi Date.

Chihei Hatakeyama (畠山地平), born in 1978) is an electronic music artist from Tokyo, Japan. Hatakeyama's music is characteristically very slow, composed by repeatedly processing guitars, pianos, and vibraphones on a laptop. The result is a mix of droning chords and sparse single instruments rising above the mix. His music may be classified as either post-ambient experimental music or new-age music. Chihei Hatakeyama has released over 19 albums as of 2013.
