Sco-Mule is a live album by the American rock band Gov't Mule featuring jazz guitarist John Scofield, recorded at two 1999 shows in Atlanta, Georgia, with the band's original members Warren Haynes, Allen Woody, and Matt Abts. The Atlanta performances, which also featured keyboardist Dan Matrazzo, have been widely traded, discussed and revered by Mule fans for 15 years.
Of the many shows that Gov't Mule's faithful fans have clamored to have officially released, this is among the most deeply desired. These tapes on double disc were culled from a pair of December 1999 gigs in Georgia where the trio – guitarist Warren Haynes, bassist Allen Woody, and drummer Matt Abts – invited ace jazz guitarist John Scofield and keyboardist Dr. Dan Matrazzo to sit in. They were originally intended for release as a live album, but due to Woody's premature death a couple of months later, they were shelved. Sco-Mule is high-flying musical collaboration at its very best. Inspired, in the cut, wildly creative, and sprawling, this is the evidence that these cats brought everything to the stage in these shows.
Dedicated to Allen Woody, Farmer & Chris Whitley Disc 1: Recorded at The Roxy, Atlanta, on September 23, 1999. Disc 2: Recorded at The Georgia Theatre, Athens, on September 22, 1999, except "Afro Blue" (Recorded at The Roxy, Atlanta, on September 23, 1999) 8 pages booklet Replica of Sco-Mule.
So his appearances from two September 1999 Mule evenings, the 22nd at the Georgia Theater in Athens and the 23rd at the Roxy in Atlanta were a natural extension of that effort. Approximately two hours running time on two CDs, Sco-Mule contains the bulk, though not all, of the four musicians live performances, along with keyboardist Dr. Dan Matrazzo (Col. Bruce Hampton, drummer Jeff Sipe). The sequence of events leading to the release of Sco-Mule has been quite circuitous, as the untimely death of Woody in 2000 put the release on hold while Gov’t Mule reconfigured itself. But as Warren Haynes & Co hit their twentieth anniversary in 2014, the recordings were exhumed to be mixed and mastered for a package distinguished with annotations from Haynes and Scofield themselves and adorned with a striking piece of artwork commissioned specifically for the cover.
