Sextet ‎(CD, Album, RE, Pap). Fantastic album - listen to early Sabres of Paradise stuff and spot the references! Early eighties 'white funk/jazz' - excellent live percussion and bass. Reply Notify me 1 Helpful.

A Certain Ratio started out as ascetic avant-gardists; their first single, 1979's "All Night Party", was beatless and entirely un-party-like. What they'd have been waiting for, actually, was Sextet's centerpiece-just not in this form. On the album, "Knife Slits Water" is a ute, two-chord mantra: Kerr works endless variations on a little bass figure as Tilson mutters about sex, her voice doubled by an eerie pitch-displacement effect, and somebody makes a bunch of prickly noise with a kalimba.

A Certain Ratio’s Sextet, reissued this week, is without question the band’s finest moment. Above is the rare promo video ‘Knife Slits Water’ (apologies for the poor quality). Self-produced at Revolution Studio, Sextet saw the original Ratio quintet of Donald Johnson, Jeremy Kerr, Martin Moscrop, Simon Topping and Peter Terrell joined by co-vocalist Martha ‘Tili’ Tilson

A Certain Ratio's first album, "To Each," features the gloom of Joy Division with a ganky funk foundation. An excellent record, quite unlike anything else at the time. Sextet" embraces a cleaner sound and a much wider musical canvas, with some strong melodies (the wonderful "Lucinda"), quirky funk ("Gum"), extended rhythm experiments, and the wonderful creepiness of "Knife Slits Water. The album has a couple of throwaways, but so does "To Each.
