Mad Shadows was the second album by Mott the Hoople. It was recorded in 1970 and released in the UK on Island Records in September 1970 (catalogue number ILPS 9119) and in the US by Atlantic Records (cat. no. SD 8272). It was subsequently re-released by Angel Air in 2003 (SJPCD158). As with their debut album, it was produced by Guy Stevens. The original pressing reached No. 48 in the UK Albums Chart in October 1970.

Mott The Hoople began working on their second album almost as soon as the first was on the streets. The recording of Mott The Hoople's second album turned out to be a long, drawn out, tortuous affair. While some recording had been done in November, the band spent December 1969 and January 1970 pretty much on the road in the UK (apart from rehearsals and recording demos). Opener "Thunderbuck Ram" featured Mick Ralphs on lead vocal and is a suitably moody hard rock song. Threads of Iron" and "You Are One of Us" are probably the two best after the aforementioned pair but the other songs are just okay, which pretty sums up & Shadows' for me. No one who is checking out Mott the Hoople for the first time should make either of the first two LPs their initial purchase. Once you've dug deep enough into the catalogue then an appreciation can be found for their earlier forays.
