It can be argued that Rihanna’s appeal (aside from physical appearance) is her unique ability to sink her vocals deep into the rivers of production. This musical trademark is evidenced on Anti, the eighth project from the Barbados native, more so than it has on any other album that she’s put out to the public. About ANTI . ANTi is Rihanna’s eighth studio album, leaked on January 27, 2016 and released for free the following day. The album art was designed by Israeli artist Roy Nachum. It features an image of Rihanna as a child overlaid with a poem written in braille. The poem was written by Chloe Mitchell and is titled If They Let Us. ANTI is a fun and conflicted pop record, at its most interesting when it’s at its smallest and most idiosyncratic. If the album has a narrative arc, it’s about disappointment: the ways in which the people you trust can still come up short in the end, and how lonesome that can feel. Anyone hoping that ANTI might be Rihanna’s opus, some grand declaration of intent, is likely to be underwhelmed.
