Dwike Mitchell - piano. Willie Ruff - bass, French horn. Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie sounds quite comfortable playing in an intimate setting with pianist Dwike Mitchell and Willie Ruff (who plays bass and occasional French horn). Gillespie explores a couple of recent collaborations with his sidemen plus "ConAlma," "Woodyn' You" and Ruff's "Bella Bella. This is one of Gillespie's stronger sets of the '70s; he was 54 years old at the time.
The classical background of each player is evident throughout much of the album, particularly during Mitchell's elaborate runs in "My One and Only Love" and "Yesterdays. Ruff occasionally plays the role of timekeeper, but is generally playing a separate melodic line to complement Mitchell. Ruff's formidable French horn takes over the spotlight in a stirring arrangement of "Ill Wind.
