Florilegium - Telemann: Essercizii Musici. Trio sonata in g minor twv 42:g5 oboe, violin, contin. Solo sonata in d major twv 41:d9 flute, continuo. Today Telemann is particularly known for his sonatas, and he himself stated in his autobio graphies that he considered his trios to be his finest works and yet the works that make up his Essercizii musici are often viewed in negative terms, presumably because of their lack of originality. The collection was published sometime after the publication of his autobiography of 1739 and before an advertisement in the Hamburger Correspondent in 1740, but it is commonly believed that these sonatas were probably composed up to ten years prior to their date of publication, and are representative of the.
The St Mark Passion (German: Markus-Passion), BWV 247, is a lost Passion setting by Johann Sebastian Bach, first performed in Leipzig on Good Friday, 23 March 1731 and again, in a revised version, in 1744. Though Bach's music is lost, the libretto by Picander is still extant, and from this, the work can to some degree be reconstructed. Unlike Bach's earlier existing passions (St John Passion and St Matthew Passion), the Markus-Passion is probably a parody-it recycles previous works.
Works: St Matthew Passion (1758). Performer: Friederike Holzhausen (soprano), Frédéric Meylan (alto), Sebastian Reim (tenor), Roland Fenes, Ralf Grobe (baritone); Biederitzer Kantorei Chamber Choir, Magdeburg Baroque Orchestra/Michael Scholl. The five cantatas performed by the Saxon Vocal Ensemble are probably among the very earliest surviving works by Telemann, seeming to belong to his period at Leipzig University between 1701 and 1705. Some of the stylistic versatility and vigorous invention that characterise almost all his later music is present in these effective early compositions which are sensitively performed. The remaining discs feature works of Telemann’s maturity. This album makes a seemingly effortless case for the music of these composers'.
