A revolution occurred in 20th century music listening as the radio gained popularity worldwide, and new media and technologies were developed to record, capture, reproduce and distribute music. Because music was no longer limited to concerts and clubs, it became possible for music artists to quickly gain fame nationwide and sometimes worldwide. Through paraphrase borrowing, style simulation, and modeling, past and present will, modifying one another, come together not only within culture, but within the oeuvre of a single artist and within a single work of ar.

The 20th century was clearly a period of widespread experimentation and many composers wanted the freedom to explore new compositional approaches without the restrictions and expectations that accompany traditional genres. Even when longstanding genres were used, composers felt very comfortable abandoning the traditional structures of those genres. This type of music thus became labelled neoclassicism. Igor Stravinsky (Pulcinella and Symphony of Psalms), Sergei Prokofiev (Classical Symphony), Ravel (Le tombeau de Couperin) and Paul Hindemith (Symphony: Mathis der Maler) all produced neoclassical works. Figure 2. Igor Stravinsky. The termexperimental music was coined by Cage to describe works that produce unpredictable results, according to the definition an experimental action is one the outcome of which is not foreseen.
The story of twentieth-century music is one of leave-takings in many ways. Many had to literally leave home, displaced by political upheavals. In Threads Sir Simon Rattle presents an ecclectic, and very personal selection of works by 20th century composers like Berio, Henze, Kurtag, Gubaidulina and Birtwistle to illustrate the rich variety of new musical trends he believes pave the way to the future. With excerpts from: BERIO: Laborintus II; HENZE: Symphony No. 8; KURTAG: Grabstein fur Stefan; BIRTWISTLE: Ritual Fragment; TURNAGE: Drowned Out; KNUSSEN: Flourish of Fireworks; GUBAIDULINA: Zeitgestalten.

Music in the 20th Century changed dramatically, due to the hostile political climate, advances in technology, and huge shifts in style. Many composers, struggling to build any further on the music of generations gone by, reacted against established musical trends, creating exciting new forms and styles. Music was greatly influenced by the enormous political events which shook Europe in the middle of the 20th Century.
