Acoustic Alchemy is an English smooth jazz band formed in England in the early 1980s by Nick Webb and Simon James. Acoustic Alchemy was formed around the acoustic guitars of Simon James (nylon string) and Nick Webb (steel string), often backed up by double bass, percussion, and string quartet the Violettes. The band made two albums that were unprofitable. In the mid-1980s, James left, and in the 1990s he formed Kymaera, a similar, though more Latin oriented band.

Formed in London in 1981, Acoustic Alchemy originally featured guitarist Nick Webb and nylon guitarist Simon James. Webb had studied jazz at Leeds College of Music, and both he and James issued two albums which also featured the string quartet the Violettes. The albums went largely unnoticed, and the two eventually parted ways. In 1985, Webb formed a second version of the band featuring Greg Carmichael, who had studied classical guitar at the London College of Music and led his own group. The duo initially found work for Virgin Airlines, providing in-flight music on trans-Atlantic trips.

Nicholas "Nick" Webb (born 14 March 1954 – 5 February 1998) was an English acoustic guitarist, composer, and co-founder of contemporary jazz group Acoustic Alchemy. Webb was the brother of Alex Webb, the nephew of actress Sylvia Syms and appeared as a child in The Punch and Judy Man, British comedian Tony Hancock's second starring vehicle, in which Syms played his wife. Subsequently James left the partnership to study flamenco guitar in Spain, leaving Webb to promote the record on his own. Webb turned to a rock guitarist named Greg Carmichael, whose background complemented his own – while Webb had studied jazz at Leeds College of Music, Carmichael had studied classical at London College of Music.
