The Wars of the Roses were a series of English civil wars for control of the throne of England fought between supporters of two rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet: the House of Lancaster, associated with a red rose, and the House of York, whose symbol was a white rose. Eventually, the wars eliminated the male lines of both families.
New England Roses's profile including the latest music, albums, songs, music videos and more updates.
The first phase of the Wars of the Roses was fought between Henry VI of Lancaster and Richard, Duke of York. At the Battle of St. Albans in 1455, Henry and his Lancastrian supporters were defeated by Richard. Queen Margaret fled to France and vowed to bring back French mercenaries for her husband. In 1459, Margaret returned to England and defeated Richard’s Yorkist armies at the Battle of Ludlow. Richard fled to Ireland. The next nine years were the most violent. Many of the Lancastrian supporters were defeated and Henry VI was thrown into the Tower of London. Parliament was at an impasse since the war was unprecedented. English law decreed that a new king could not be crowned until the old king died. Parliament declared Richard regent, and then disinherited Henry’s son. Margaret, furious at the loss of her son’s power, raised another Lancastrian army.

York’s son Edward IV, meanwhile, crushed the Lancasters in battle and claimed the throne before being briefly deposed in 1470. He quickly won back his kingship and ruled for several years of relative peace, but his sudden death in 1483 launched yet another period of infighting that saw his heirs murdered and the Yorkist Richard III and the Lancastrian Henry Tudor both elbow their way into power. Double-crossing was rampant during the Wars of the Roses, and many key battles turned on acts of treachery. The most extraordinary defection came in 1470, courtesy of the Earl of Warwick, a popular nobleman and power broker nicknamed the Kingmaker. Tudor was immediately crowned King Henry VII, launching a new Tudor Dynasty that flourished until the early 17th century.
The Wars of the Roses (1455–1487) were a series of civil wars, fought over the throne of England, between supporters of the House of Lancaster and supporters of the House of York. Both houses were branches of the Plantagenet royal house, tracing their descent from King Edward III. The main reason for the war was that King Edward III had many sons, as shown in the family tree below
Inside the Guns N’ Roses Reunion and His New Album. The guitarist gives his first extensive interview on reuniting with GNR and explains why he’s not quitting his solo career. You can see some amazing things out the window of this in rural England, where Slash is currently hanging out in a backward Thrasher cap and talking up his new album, Living the Dream, with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, due September 21st. But he and his other bandmates have traveled to this vast green estate because he’s. playing the nearby Download Festival tomorrow with Guns N’ Roses - and he hasn’t, until this 90-minute interview, talked in depth about their fantastically successful reunion. How did you manage to make a Conspirators album with all the Guns touring you’re doing? I started preproduction on this new material, and then I went back on the road.
A new phase of the civil war began in 1459 when York, goaded by the queen’s undisguised preparations to attack him, rebelled for the last time. Gathering forces in northern England, the Lancastrians surprised and killed York at Wakefield in December and then marched south toward London, defeating Warwick on the way at the Second Battle of St. Albans (February 17, 1461). Meanwhile, York’s eldest son and heir, Edward, had defeated a Lancastrian force at Mortimer’s Cross (February 2) and marched to relieve London, arriving before Margaret on February 26. The young duke of York was proclaimed King Edward IV at Westminster on March 4. Then Edward, with the remainder of Warwick’s forces, pursued Margaret north to Towton. The Battle of Towton during the Wars of the Roses was one of the deadliest battles ever fought in England.
