Evil Spirits was funded by a pledge campaign and produced by David Bowie's longtime and frequent collaborator Tony Visconti. We deliberately recorded the album retro style – the same way our debut album was made, basically, said guitarist Captain Sensible. There’s something wonderful about the '70s sounds; glam, rock and punk records – they all sound so great, and Tony specializes in beautifully crafted old-school production. So a song like ‘Standing on the Edge of Tomorrow’ may seem quite joyous and uplifting musically, but some of the lyrics might be about quite dark things. That’s what I’d like to think this album is – an uplifting album, not a moaning old album – not ‘this is terrible, and that’s terrible’, and then not offering any answers. It’s more a case of, ‘If we get it together, maybe we could change things a bi.
Evil Spirits is a whirl of Shadows twang, steampunk and wailing guitar that embraces the ghosts of the 60s more closely than any punk notions. While hooks like ‘I’m a devil, a complicated rebel’ evoke images of Alan Partridge playing Nigel Farage in a motel bedroom mirror rather than Bela Lugosi, there’s also a thread of seriousness. They lambast the way ‘our masters’ have got us fighting each other, and the subject of The Daily Liar is obvious. The Damned, in their lyrics, sound more frightened than frightening: a just response to contemporary calamities.
While Evil Spirits isn't a late-career masterpiece, Visconti's production chops have at least ensured a warm and rich listening experience. Ian Rushbury of PopMatters said Evil Spirits is a strong, weirdly timeless album. It's hard to pin this record down to a point in time – it certainly doesn't sound like 2018, but it sure as eggs are eggs doesn't sound like it's from 1978 either. It sounds like a band stretching out and having fun in a studio, under the watchful eye of someone who is accustomed to working with mavericks and outcasts.

Released in 2018, Evil Spirits doesn't transform the Damned into Crass, but this sounds like the most socially conscious album the group has released to date. Here, the Damned sing about the precarious state of mankind ("Standing on the Edge of Tomorrow"), dangerous attitudes on all sides of the political spectrum ("Look Left"), the casual cynicism of the powers that be ("We're So Nice"), and corrupt forces at work in the media ("Daily Liar"). Hardly a late-career masterpiece, Evil Spirits at least shows that the Damned are still smart and witty while paying attention to the global chaos of the era of Brexit and Trump, and they haven't lost their touch in the recording studio.
