The final Genesis album with original front man Peter Gabriel, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is widely considered to be the band’s magnum opus. The album was written in a unique way compared to the other Genesis works.

In 1974 Genesis were coming off the back of their first British Top 10 studio album, Selling England By The Pound, and they had even had a brief flirtation with the singles chart with the quirky but catchy I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe), which got to Their recent chart success had also caused the brief Top 40 appearance in the charts of an earlier album, Nursery Cryme, so three years of building up a cult audience via that and their Foxtrot album, plus constant gigging, was paying of. Released in November 1974, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway reached in the UK, while nearly cracking the US Top 40, reaching and eventually going Gold. The band went on a world tour upon its release, performing the album in its entirety 102 times.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is the first song from Genesis's 1974 album of the same name Although it did not chart, it was frequently played on American FM radio stations. Like other songs on the album, the music and lyrics in "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" are partially derived from 1960s soul songs. The end of the song features the words "They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway.

This means that The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway contains both Genesis' most immediate music to date and its most elliptical. In retrospect, this first LP plays a bit more like the first Gabriel solo album than the final Genesis album, but there's also little question that the band helps form and shape this music (with Brian Eno adding extra coloring on occasion), while Genesis shines as a group shines on the impressionistic second half.
