Patti Smith has written an essay on her performance at this year’s Nobel Prize Award Ceremony. At the Stockholm ceremony last week, she performed Bob Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall in honor of Dylan, who was not present to accept his Nobel Prize in Literature. The essay centers on the moment Smith, overcome with nerves, couldn’t deliver the song’s lyrics. Smith initially agreed to perform one of her own songs at the ceremony, before being told Dylan had taken the literature award.

Bob Dylan admitted he was stunned and surprised when he was told he had won a Nobel prize because he had never stopped to consider whether his songs were literature. Dylan, whose speech was read out by the US ambassador to Sweden at the annual awards dinner, said the prize was something I never could have imagined or seen coming. He said from an early age he had read and absorbed the works of past winners and giants of literature such as Kipling, Shaw, Thomas Mann, Pearl Buck, Albert Camus and Hemingway.
Desire is the 17th studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on January 5, 1976 by Columbia Records. It is one of Dylan's most collaborative efforts, featuring the same caravan of musicians as the acclaimed Rolling Thunder Revue tours the previous year (later documented on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5). Many of the songs also featured backing vocals by Emmylou Harris and Ronee Blakley
A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" is a song written by Bob Dylan in the summer of 1962 and recorded later that year for his second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Its lyrical structure is thematically complex and modeled after the question and answer form of traditional ballads such as "Lord Randall". The song is characterized by dark symbolist imagery and a message communicating injustice, suffering, pollution, and warfare
Watch Patti Smith's rendition of Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall at the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, where Dylan received the award in Literature. On December 10, Bob Dylan, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, was unable to attend the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony. In his place, Dylan's dear friend Patti Smith made an appearance at the event in Stockholm, and honored the songwriter by performing a rendition of A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall. Being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature is something I never could have imagined or seen coming. The songwriter then begins to express the immense honor he feels to join the "giants of literature: Kipling, Shaw, Thomas Mann, Pearl Buck, Albert Camus, Hemingway" that were also awarded the prize. Growing up, Smith was greatly inspired by poetry and Bob Dylan, whose songs were rich in poetry and politics. Before experimenting with music, she successfully made a name for herself as a poet in New York City’s underground arts scene. Among Smith’s most acclaimed work, her 1975 debut album, Horses, aimed to reflect the impact of her artistic influences: I was consciously trying to make a record that would make a certain type of person not feel alone. Undefined by gender, Smith instead called attention to herself as an artist, never reliant upon sex appeal for success – with her signature androgynous appearance, she defied expectations and boundaries for women in rock. Following the direction of her own creative muse, her work touches upon numerous styles, spanning from structured rock to free-form experimentation.
Patti Smith: interview. This is an archived page. Punk poetess Patti Smith is adamant that rock ‘n‘ roll still matters, though Michael Hodges isn‘t so convinced. Patti Smith is telling everyone in the first-floor lounge of the Covent Garden Hotel – which is mainly rich men and rich women – just what she thinks about her country’s invasion of Iraq. They’re not here for an impromptu lecture from a 60-year-old woman who looks and sounds like she’s escaped from the oracle at Delphi, they’ve come here to talk about shopping. The motivation of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan or The Who wasn’t marketing, to get rich, or be a celebrity. I’m not saying that they didn’t want to make money and have a good time, but their driving force was to work and that’s why the music is still revolutionary.
