By the end of World War Two, Nehru was recognised as Gandhi's successor. This had a significant impact on Nehru's declining health. He died on 27 May 1964. Two years later Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, became prime minister. With an interruption of only three years, she held the post until her assassination in 1984. Nehru’s visit to the US in 1949 was successful with everyone except the people who mattered. Secretary of state Dean Acheson later wrote that Nehru was one of the most difficult men with whom I have ever had to deal".

Since Sri Krishna was the eighth child, he was smuggled out of prison to be raised by his foster parents Nanda and Yasoda in Gokula.
