Senese was born in Naples, the son of Anna Senese and James Smith, an American soldier arrived in Italy because of the World War II. He started playing the saxophone at 12 years old. He made his professional debut in the 1960s, as a member of various groups including the rhythm and blues band it (later known as Showmen In 1974 Senese co-founded and was the leader of the critically acclaimed jazz-rock group it.
