Nina Simone in Concert is an album by riter Nina Simone. It was her first album for the record label Philips and was made up of three live recordings in Carnegie Hall, New York City in March and April 1964 (previously, she had recorded Nina Simone at Carnegie Hall in 1963 for Colpix Records). This album marks the beginning of "Nina Simone, the Civil Rights singer" in her recording career (she had already incorporated the civil rights message in her performances)
The idea for the album came while Jamie Stewart was on tour with Swans. Nina was recorded in a day. The album features Jamie Stewart's voice, Ches Smith on drums, Tim Berne and Tony Malaby on saxophones, Andrea Parkins on accordion, and Mary Halvorson on guitar. The latter four had experience in avant jazz.
Simone played piano and arranged all the material; she was supported by drummer Bob Hamilton, guitarist Rudy Stevenson, and Lisle Atkinson on bass. The original-CD issue of this set was paired with I Put a Spell on You, which made sense because this album is only 35-minutes long. However, what this reissue loses in quantity it more than makes up for in quality of sound. The remastering job by Jeff Willens is artful, and brings out all the nuances of the rooms she sang in - Nina Simone in Concert was assembled form three different shows in New York City in March and April of 1964. This album is a classic. It is as great an introduction as one is likely to get anywhere, and for the price, it's unbeatable.
Nina Simone in Concert (1964). In early 1964, Nina signed with Philips Records, who released this album as her first for them. Comprised of songs from three performances at Carnegie Hall in 1964, this album is notable for its obvious shift by Nina into Civil Rights Activism, as she became less concerned with appealing to people who liked I Loves You, Porgy, and more concerned with chronicling the reality of the movement happening in America. Nina Simone’s place in classic rock and classic soul canon is sometimes unjustly relegated to two songs from this album: her symphony-backed cover of I Put a Spell on You and Feeling Good, the song of hers that’s been streamed more than any other. Nina’s career is too unwieldy and too varied to be reduced to a single album, or a single song, which is why it’s so hard for people to dive into her discography. You don’t know where to start.
