Like volume one of this fine series, it's a good collection of a variety of sounds on the cusp of becoming rock & roll, though by this point the line was sometimes being crossed into bona fide early rock.

The Excello Blues Story. Leading off Volume 2 (1955-1957) is Rollin' Stone by The Marigolds, who formed up while inmates at Tennessee State Penitentiary. In June 1955 it topped out at 8 R&B as Excello 2057, and that same month a cover by The Fontane Sisters at Dot made it to 13 Billboard Pop. Then, at track 2, is the label's highest charting national hit to date.
