Prince Buster was at the vanguard of the new young ska sound of Jamaica in the early 60s; the sound was so energised and the beat so infectious that as young teenagers we were immediately hooked on Prince Buster’s music, Rodigan recalled. Buster was the first Jamaican to have a top 20 hit in Britain with Al Capone in 1965; other exuberant signature tunes included One Step Beyond and Enjoy Yourself.
The 'King of Ska,' Prince Buster, born 24 May 1938 in Kingston Jamaica, passed away on 8 september 2016, aged 78. Prince Buster RI. Buster initially worked in the sound system field with Clement Dodd, before falling out with him, and working with Duke Reid on his Trojan sound system. Dodd & Reid were the undisputed kings of Jamaica’s favourite way of hearing music. Within a short space of time, partly by devious means, Buster was acclaimed the Prince King of Jamaica’s sound systems
Compiled by the Trojans' Gaz Mayall, 2000s King of Ska was the first all-new Prince Buster compilation in almost 30 years, yet it was sensibly pieced together in the knowledge that almost everybody who was likely to look at it would already have picked up one of the earliest collections. So, no "Al Capone," "Ten Commandments of Man" or "Big Five"; instead, 16 tracks include close to a dozen that aren't simply making their CD debut, they're being heard for the first time since they originally appeared on now-scratchy 45s, back in Buster's prime.
