Mulligan Meets Monk is a studio album by American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, originally released on Riverside Records in 1957. It was remastered for CD in 1987 (on Fantasy's Original Jazz Classics) with three additional alternative takes from the original session. Side One. "'Round Midnight" (Monk, Cootie Williams, Bernie Hanighen) – 8:29. Rhythm-a-Ning" (Monk) – 5:19.

Mulligan Meets Monk documents the 1957 meeting of two sharp musical minds. Though the pairing may seem unlikely, baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan - whose cool, West Coast style blends dexterity with laid-back grace - and Thelonious Monk - whose radical, angular piano playing and thoroughly modern compositions are blueprints for the possibilities of bop - sound remarkable together. In fact, it is the contrast between the players' styles that lends this set its balance and appeal. The program, which includes four compositions by Monk and one by Mulligan, is unassailable

Very first pressing of 'Mulligan Meets Monk' - does not yet have the photograph of Monk and Mulligan on the front cover. Also bears no 'Riverside' and/or logo at the bottom right front cover; it does, however, bear the 'Contemporary Series' sign with Riverside and the catalog number mentioned in it at the top right of the front cover. Unlike other 1957 . pressings this one has the red-ink 'ribbon' stamp that reads 'Riverside Spectrosonic High Fidelity Engineering Reeves', placed to the right of the personnel names.

Critics thought the pairing of Gerry Mulligan and Thelonious Monk a strange one when this 1957 session was originally released, Mulligan's light baritone saxophone strongly identified with the cool school and Monk's percussive piano, fractured rhythms, and dissonant tunes the last word in bop. It's an interesting combination, though, with Mulligan's melodic focus actually working fairly well with Monk and his regular band, drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Wilbur Ware.

Thelonious Monk is easily the greatest composer of jazz standards (those songs composed specifically for jazz and not derived from the Great American Songbook). Gerry Mulligan, a mere three years previously, turned jazz on its ear by removing the piano as a harmonic instrument, essentially suspending the solo instruments on a highwire with the barest of rhythmic support. The meeting celebrates the spontaneity of jazz, its improvisational core.
