The Bandwagon is a live album by pianist/composer Jason Moran recorded at the Village Vanguard in 2002 and released on the Blue Note label. The album is notable for the variety of source material for its songs. In addition to covers of classical, jazz, and popular music, The Bandwagon includes original music built on several voice recordings, including a Turkish telephone conversation ("Straight Outta Istanbul") and Chinese stock reports ("Infospace").

Moran first played the Village Vanguard with Greg Osby's band in the late 1990s. As a leader, Moran has been playing with The Bandwagon in the West Village club for nearly all of the group's 10 years; in 2002, the group recorded a live album at the venue. For this run, he said he would feature songs from Ten, and also dig into some of the extensive repertoire he's accumulated. Another One" (Mateen). Blessing The Boats" (. Feedback Pt. 2" (J. Moran).

A decade ago, when Jason Moran released Artist in Residence, it might have been possible to see that album as an outlier. Made up of selections from several large commissioned works - with a percussive cameo by the performance artist Joan Jonas, and a spoken-word sample of the conceptual artist Adrian Piper - it framed Mr. Moran as not only a pianist and composer but also a fluent traveler in the realm of contemporary art. He was in his early 30s then, already celebrated as a musician working both in and around jazz conventions.

We couldn’t think of an artist better qualified than Jason Moran to help iconic West Village jazz room the Village Vanguard celebrate its 80th birthday. Moran, a pianist with an uncanny knack for animating history, has curated a fascinating anniversary series, featuring a night of solo piano (Mar 10), an all-Monk evening (Mar 13), collaborations with poets and comedians (Mar 11 and 12, respectively), guest turns from vocalist Alicia Hall Moran and guitarist Bill Frisell (Mar 14), and a rare club appearance from saxist Charles Lloyd's.

Last week Moran dropped another new album, Bangs, a chamberish set with guitarist Mary Halvorson and trumpeter Ron Miles that shows this trio interacting with a degree of impulse and intimacy remarkable for players who don't work together frequently. All three musicians contributed material to the record, and while it doesn't display the stop-on-a-dime propulsion and redirection of the Bandwagon, there's no missing how well these folks listen and respond to one another, each regularly shape-shifting and altering sound from tune t0 tune, and sometimes within a single piece.

Moran was joined on the album by Osby, drummer Eric Harland (a classmate of Moran's at the Manhattan School, and the one who recommended him to Osby), vibraphonist Stefon Harris and acoustic bassist Lonnie Plaxico. Moran's next album, 2000's Facing Left (after a work by Egon Schiele ), featured a trio that formed out of Osby's group, New Directions: Moran, bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits. Compositions were some of Moran's and some by Mateen, Duke Ellington, Björk and Byard. Jason Moran and the Bandwagon: Live at the Village Vanguard". 07/16/2016 12:06:33 PM UTC.
