The Joker" is a song by the Steve Miller Band from their 1973 album The Joker. It is one of two Steve Miller Band songs that feature the nonce word "pompatus". The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1974. More than 16 years later, in September 1990, it reached number one in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks after being used in "Great Deal", a Hugh Johnson-directed television advertisement for Levi's, thus holding the record for the longest gap between transatlantic chart-toppers.
The Steve Miller Band has marked the 40th anniversary of its iconic album, "The Joker", with the digital release of "The Joker Live". The new album - which features exclusive, unreleased tracks - was recorded on the road last year and was issued in sync with the start of a North American tour with Journey, which kicked off in Chula Vista, California.
The Joker is the eighth studio album by Steve Miller Band. The album marked a period of significant change for the group as the band abandoned their music for a more melodic, smooth rock/blues sound. Perhaps not coincidentally, it was also their first solid commercial success due to the strong radio-play of the title track. The title track took 19 days to record.

Steve Miller celebrated the 40th anniversary of his breakthrough 1973 album The Joker by releasing a brand-new live recording of the entire album as The Joker Live in Concert in 2014
Steve Miller released his classic album The Joker in 1973, and the distinctive title track was a huge hit all around the world that year. And it was a number one hit all over again in 1990, after it was used in a Levi’s ad. In 2014, Miller decided to play all nine of the original album tracks live on tour, using his long-standing performance perfected touring band of Kenny Lee Lewis, Gordy Knutson, Joseph Wooten, Sonny Charles and Jacob Petersen, with guest appearances from 70s drummer Gary Mallaber and 60s and 70s bassist Lonnie Turner.
